Remote witness testing – how live HD cameras can bring you into the test room

Travel constraints and tight project schedules don’t have to impact lead-times

Witness testing is straightforward when the inspector is local and the schedule has some flexibility. It’s a different matter when the inspector is on the other side of the world, the test slot is fixed weeks in advance, and a flight delay or a visa hold-up is enough to push the whole project back. We wanted to take those variables out of the equation which is why we introduced remote witness testing.

Multi-angle HD, and the controls are in your hands

We’ve installed multi-angle HD cameras around the test area and built a data streaming interface that puts control of the cameras directly into the inspector’s hands. They’re not watching a fixed shot that someone else has framed for them – they can pan, zoom and switch between angles themselves, on their own laptop, from anywhere in the world.

That matters more than it might sound. A witness inspector doing their job properly wants to follow their own instincts – get closer to a seat face, check a gauge reading, watch a joint under pressure – rather than ask someone on-site to point a camera where they think it should go. Giving them that control means the inspection stays theirs, not ours, even though they’re thousands of miles away. Direct communication with the tester runs alongside the feed throughout, so nothing about the exchange feels remote at all.

Remote testing for in potentially hazardous conditions

Remote witness testing has also changed how testing can be achieved for high-pressure gas testing and cryogenic testing, which come with health and safety exclusion zones that keep everyone at a distance.

With remote testing an inspector can get a closer, more continuous view of a high-pressure or cryogenic test from behind a camera because the exclusion zone that keeps people away doesn’t apply to a lens. It’s a genuine case where the remote option isn’t just a substitute for being there – it’s actually a better view.

What it means for your project

The practical upshot is that travel and scheduling no longer have to sit on your project’s critical path. Your inspector joins from wherever they are, with the same level of scrutiny they’d have on-site and a live line to the person running the test. If they want to review something again afterwards, the whole test can be recorded for later viewing too.
